Lives of the Great Women Scientists: The Never Ending Story?

These four books deal with the lives of women scientists and the debates about their places in science. Two are works of scholarly biography, the third is a collection of very short biographical reflections by distinguished Americans and the fourth is a textbook for undergraduates. Three of the four are based on original scholarship, the other is a review of literature that draws heavily on works that are themselves secondary sources. Comfort's book is a thorough biography of Barbara McClintock, which sets her work coherently in the history of 20th-century genetics. Neeley has written a scholarly biography of Mary Somerville (1780-1872) for whom the Oxford women's college is named.
