Is the focus on health-related behaviours a new phenomenon? Reply to Vallgarda (2010)

The central empirical claim of my paper (Armstrong, 2009) was that the word 'behaviour' was not used in 19th century medicine (except in relation to inanimate objects), was used only sporadically in the early 20th century, and then in the second half of the century became a central component of the discourse of modern medicine. The sources used to draw this conclusion were The Lancet since 1823 and the American Journal of Public Health since 1911.
