Jacksonville utility to replace St Johns coal plant with nuclear, gas capacity

One of the largest municipally-owned coal plants in Florida has been slated for shutdown, and its two owners are working to replace its 1,276 MW of capacity. JEA and Florida Power & Light Co. announced March 17 that the St Johns River Power plant will close in early 2018, citing customer energy conservation efforts as a major factor in the decision. JEA Managing Director and CEO Paul McElroy said in an interview that discussions between JEA and FPL on St Johns have been ongoing for two years, with a “very intense” last six months.
