The election of President Donald Trump may usher in a new era of friendliness between lawmakers and the coal industry, but one of coal’s strongest opponents is growing in response to the election results. The Sierra Club, particularly its Beyond Coal campaign, has jumped at numerous opportunities to thwart the coal industry over the past several years. In addition to public relations campaigns and demonstrations, the group employs legal specialists and other experts who fight coal in regulatory arenas, legislatures and courts at the local, state and federal levels in an aim to slow the industry at “each step of the coal life cycle.”
