Teaching Hands-on Computer and Information Systems Security Despite Limited Resources

Computer and information systems security is an important topic in the computer science curriculum. Teaching courses that raise awareness of the various components of information assurance is a daunting challenge without hands-on exercises to stimulate the understanding of the students. Each panelist has had experience in teaching security courses on shoestring budgets with constrained resources. We will share our experiences in teaching such courses despite limited resources of time, money, equipment and support. We will also illustrate effective hands-on exercises that can be implemented on limited budgets and restricted resources. Several handouts will be distributed to the audience; these handouts will describe specific hands-on exercises that have been successfully used by the panelists in teaching information security classes. A resources page with annotated URL's will also be made available to interested colleagues and peers. Suggestions from the audience on improving our lab assignments and creatively using existing resources will be welcomed. We anticipate using more than half the allocated time in this manner.
