What is the muir shelter? It's an octagonal granite structure at 11,975-foot elevation in Muir Pass, built by the Sierra Club in 1930 under the leadership of then-director Will Colby [founder of the Club's High Trips] to commemorate John Muir. It was designed by Henry Gutterson, a prominent Berkeley architect, in the tradition of the truill of southern Italy. It's well above treeline in a forbidding moonscape of rock. Inside, you look up and see finely arranged corbeled stonework rising to the top of the cone-shaped roof. It's beautifully crafted and intended to survive the ages.
