Of all the world's ships, those that carry cargoes in bulk have probably changed the least in the 40 years that Ships Monthly has been coming off the presses. The external appearance of bulk carriers and petroleum tankers today has changed little from four decades ago, the exception being that few tankers have a forward superstructure. The two types of ship also appear to have reached their size zenith, with the 365,000dwt ore carrier Berge Stalh, completed in 1986, still the largest bulk carrier afloat while the largest tanker ever built, the 555,051dwt crude carrier Pierre Guillaumat, survived only six years before being scrapped in 1983.
