A break with tradition

In 1948, two new ships entered the UK-Continent-Brazil service of South America Saint Line and immediatly became the subject of much interest and attention. These vessels, St Essylt and St Thomas, were both completed by J. L. Thompson at Sunderland and marked a significant advance in cargo liner design. Of particular note was the accommodation for officers, crew and 12 passengers. When she entered service in June 1948, the first ship, St Essylt, was commended by the technical press for her appearance and built quality which, according to one trade journal, 'could only be beneficial in showing the flag to the ports visited on her itinerary'.
