Like a lightbulb glowing brightest just as it is about to burn out, the dawn of the Jet Age in the 1960s was also high noon for the liner era. And nowhere more than in Italy, where, on 8 September 1960, history was made with the simultaneous laying down of four great ocean liners: Italia's Michelangelo at Ansaldo and Raffaello at CRDA's Trieste yards and Lloyd Triestino's Guglielmo Marconi and Galileo Galilei at CRDA Monfalcone. Four great Italian liners, the last of their kind, born the same day; a shipbuilding record and a supreme moment in Italian maritime history.
