As Gripsholm, she was in 1925 a ship of many firsts, not least of which was being the first newbuilding for Swedish American Line, as well as the first motor-driven passenger liner on the North Atlantic. As Berlin 30 years later, long after most ships her age had been retired, she started a new career under a new flag and with a new list of 'firsts', re-establishing the German flag on the Atlantic Run after the war and, by the time she was finally retired in 1966, earning a beloved niche as the oldest serving liner on the Atlantic.
