The small but well-equipped Royal Netherlands Navy is the latest European fleet facing the prospect of drastic defence cuts. The new Dutch defence minister is aiming to slash spending by €200 million from the 2011 budget alone, with much more to come, stating there is a fundamental disconnect between the defence budget and the country's ambitions to participate in international peacekeeping missions. Up to 10,000 jobs, about one in seven military personnel, are under threat.
