New lifeboat for Holland

While the RNLI is developing the Shannon lifeboat (see SM, Dec 2012), the Netherlands lifeboat service, Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij, is also planning for the future with the development of a rigid-inflatable lifeboat in conjunction with De Vries Lentsch, Damen and TU Delft. The totally new, fast harbour lifeboat, designated the 1816-class is intended to function as 'on-scene coordination vessel' during a major rescue incident, so the new design has, among other capabilities, an advanced, electronic communication and navigations system.
