Energy-saving tankers

Bergen, Norway-based Odfjell has contracted a division of MAN Diesel & Turbo to retrofit and upgrade 11 of its 37,500dwt chemical tankers with Kappel propeller blades, fairing cones and pre-fabricated rudder bulb kits to achieve fuel savings and reduce exhaust gas emissions. The upgrades will be implemented during routine drydockings over the next two years, with the first ship, the 2003-built Bow Firda (23,190gt), currently being modified. The 37,500dwt ships feature 52 fully segregated stainless steel tanks.
