The car ferry Isle of Lewis was introduced to the Caledonian MacBrayne network in 1995 on the route from Ullapool to Stornoway, on the island after which she is named. She replaced the Norwegian-built Suilven of 1974, which by then was found to be too slow, too small and increasingly unable to comply with new changes in European maritime safety.
