摘要

Fort Lewis is in Pierce and Thurston Counties, Washington, on the eastern shore of the southern part of Puget Sound. Because of its past practices involving use and disposal of hazardous substances, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considered Fort Lewis for listing on the National Priorities List (NPL) of hazardous sites in October 1984. Sampling data at Landfill Number 5 have shown that groundwater is contaminated with volatile organic compounds, inorganic chemicals, and heavy metals. The groundwater contamination has been identified as a shallow plume extending approximately 3,000 feet west of the landfill. Because all private and public drinking water wells are upgradient of the contamination, there is no apparent potential receptor population downgradient.
