Cunard Line's dual-purpose Caronia of 1948 enjoyed a fine reputation for long and luxurious cruises, but by the mid-1960s the pioneering vessel's glory days were on the wane and retirement awaited. Around the same time, Norwegian America Line's (NAL) new Sagafjord arrived on the scene to claim her slice of the same market and became one of the most popular, and longest-serving cruise ships of her era, while also helping Cunard carry on the legacy of Caronia.
