The leisure marine industry has been contributing to some new developments in fast ferry hull design - Dag Pike investigates these alternatives and other recent designs. Current fast ferry hull designs mostly fall into one of three basic types. The catamaran meets the requirements of most operators of smaller ferries up around 40m, with the wave-piercing catamaran being the main contender in the larger sizes. A third option is the long thin monohull, which has captured a segment of the market in the larger sizes, possibly because it uses technology that is more familiar to traditional operators.
