Treating safety as an objective and not as a constraint imposed by existing design rules is the goal of the EU-funded research project SAFEDOR (design, operation, and regulation for safety). Fifty-three project partners from all sectors of the maritime industry are presently working on and promoting the new approach to increase shipping safety through innovation. At its midterm conference, which took place in Brussels in early May 2007, project results related to risk-based ship design and approval were presented.
