Navigation E-volution continues

About a year ago, in a report on a Royal Institute of Navigation conference about e-Navigation (see Ship & Boat International Jan/Feb 2010 issue), we wrote of the International Maritime Organization's (IMO's) efforts to impose order on the way marine navigation is evolving piecemeal in an increasingly digital world. IMO is doing this via an implementation plan, in which it is engaged with the likes of the International Association of Lighthouse Authorities (IALA), the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), regional and national navaid authorities, the Nautical Institute, technology enterprises and state authorities. Two areas of particular focus since then have been the need for a common data infrastructure and the vulnerability of navigational satellite systems, and how this may be mitigated.
