Although modularisation is not an entirely new concept in vessel design and construction, it remains a relatively fringe approach - albeit one that has been championed by a growing number of proponents, keen to point out the cost and time savings that advanced modular production techniques could offer. One such advocate is the Transport: Advanced and Modular (TrAM) project, a coalition of 14 partners funded by the EU's Horizon2020 research and innovation programme. The TrAM partners -including shipbuilder Fjellstrand, tech giant Wartsila, operator MBNA Thames Clippers and the University of Strathclyde, UK - are looking to develop an all-electric fast passenger ferry, and said vessel will be built in modular fashion, including the use of "never-before seen modular design and production methods", the project promises.
