The 97th session of the IMO Legal Committee (LEG) meeting took place between 15 and 19 November 2010 at IMO headquarters in London. Subjects on the agenda included a proposal submitted by the delegation of Indonesia to add a new item to the Committee's work programme, to develop appropriate legislation to address civil liability and compensation issues in cases of trans-boundary oil pollution damage caused by offshore exploration and exploitation activities. The well-publicised Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010 was not an isolated case and other countries have recently been faced with similar occurrences. Indonesia's proposal was prompted by the less well known oil spill involving the Montara offshore oil platform off the north west coast of Australia in 2009.
