Ecdis: Is the technology ready?

After the implementation of ECDIS, the development and introduction of eNavigation is likely to be the next big shake-up on the bridge - and for shipowners and operators, too. However, unless we get ECDIS right, we will mess up eNavigation - and if we mess up ECDIS (any more than we already have), then eNavigation will fail. This may be a controversial point of view, but it is based on the experience of members of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) in their role as customer, practitioner, service supplier, advocate for safe navigation and servant of world trade. It is my intention here to blur the distinction between ECDIS and eNavigation. This seems reasonable, given that similar technologies are used for both systems, and the same players will be - or are - planning, developing, building, regulating, monitoring and auditing these two close relatives.
