Seafarer recruitment and training has long been a troubled area for Europe's shipowners and Germany is no exception, the difficulty of luring young people to sea in part a reflection of the image of the seafarer's lot as lowly, unskilled work rather than a respected professional career. Hamburg's Marine Training Centre is part of the solution to this dilemma. Established three years ago by local shipping interests to fill a gap in the supply of seafarers' education, and now providing navigation, safety and technical courses, it is also a valuable tool in enhancing the notion of shipping as a career.
