The Hong Kong flag is a well established and renowned one built on the back of the city's strong shipowning background. It is Asia's largest ship register by tonnage and has become the world's fourth largest, having crossed the 83m gt mark in June.The flag is also recognised as one of the world's top quality registers, appearing on the Paris and Tokyo MOU White Lists as well as in the prestigious Qualship21 programme of the US Coast Guard. The fully autonomous Hong Kong Shipping Register is run by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region through its Marine Department (Mardep), which has over 150 years of experience in ship registration, inspection and survey.
