Investment in the new port of Duqm, a joint venture between the Omani Government and the Port of Antwerp, is being ramped up significantly. All elements of Phase 1 of the project, which includes a total of 2,200mtr of quay with a water depth of 18mtr chart datum, are either now under construction or at the tender stage. As a result, over the next few years a range of different traffic flows will start moving through the port, which is currently mainly focused on handling project cargoes for industrial and oil and gas developments in the hinterland. A 300mtr section of quay wall has already been completed as part of an early operations initiative and is fully ISPS compliant, allowing Duqm to participate in international trade. The remaining 1,900mtr of quay is expected to be fully operational by 2016.
