A part of SMM Digital in February 2021, co-organised by Seatrade Maritime, gmec comprised three panel discussions covering regulatory pressures on the maritime sector, the search for alternative future fuels, and a panel where representatives from shipping companies and environmental NGOs sat - virtually -shoulder to shoulder.Roel Hoenders, head of air pollution and energy efficiency, within IMO's Marine Environment Division said in his keynote speech that the IMO 'was not deaf to the climate emergency' but that consensus was key in regulatingaglobal industry, echoingthe sentiment of IMO secretary-general Kitack Lim who had underlined that decarbonisation was now the industry's greatest challenge when delivering the opening address of SMM Digital the day before.
