As commander, U.S. Pacific Command, Adm. Timothy J. Keatingrnis the senior U.S. military leader over an area that covers half the Earth's surface, a culturally and geographically diverse region that stretches from pole to pole, includes 36 nations and is home to more than half the world's population. Keating commands a joint force of more than 250,000 military personnel, more than one fifth of the total U.S. armed forces. His command includes 135,000 Sailors and Marines, 180 ships (including five aircraft carriers) and 1,400 naval aircraft, as well as 50,000 Soldiers, 39,000 Airmen and 350 Air Force aircraft.
