Abidjan in running to provide peacekeepers for MINUSCA

After a contingent of 450 Gabonese soldiers deployed with MINUSCA in CAR was sent home in mid-September following allegations of sexual abuse (AI, 21/09/21), several countries have stepped up to compensate for the lost manpower. Tunis quickly dispatched its first contingent of 120 air force soldiers along with four helicopters. Meanwhile, in Abidjan, the ministry of defence, overseen by Tene Birahima Ouattara, and the chief of Forces armees de Côte d'Ivoire (FACI) have dusted off an old file initially created by the ex-defence minister Hamed Bakayoko in 2018 and are considering contributing a battalion of peacekeepers to MINUSCA.
