The shore-side support provided to the Department of the Navy by Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAV-FAC) goes far beyond the construction and subsequent maintenance of buildings and related infrastructure. The command is being proactive in its focus on improving operational effectiveness, energy and environmental conservation, and cybersecurity. In my conversation with RADM Katherine L. Gregory, head of the command, at her Washington Navy Yard office in November, she stressed the command is a globally dispersed operation that not only plans, builds, maintains and then disposes of shore-side infrastructure as appropriate, but also supports a forward-deployed fleet and its platforms, such as the littoral combat ship, P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and F-35 joint strike fighter.
