The Marine Corps has said it needs 38 amphibious warfare ships to provide the necessary presence, but determined that, financially, 33 ships is an "acceptable risk." 1. Some in Congress feel that not having enough amphibs is an unacceptable risk. 2. The Senate Appropriations Committee added $800 million to its version of the fiscal 2015 appropriations bill to go toward funding a 12th LPD 17 amphibious transport dock to help mitigate the shortfall. 3. The Navy, however, has made it clear it does not want the money for amphibs and is willing to deal with the shortfall in favor of solving other Navy budget problems.
