An astronomical collaboration looking for signs of the mysterious dark matter surrounding the Milky Way reported in 2000 that it had evidence of relatively large numbers of massive compact objects in the galactic halo (MACHOs). The team, known as the MACHO collaboration, said its observations show that such objects—possibly ancient, burnt-out dwarf stars about half as massive as the sun—make up roughly 20% of the Milky Way's dark matter, an amount comparable to the mass of all the galaxy's stars.
