In a New Year's tradition dating back to the days of Queen Victoria, the British monarch handed out 2' knighthoods on 31 Decem ber. This year, a number of scientists can now address themselves as "Sir" or "Dame." The new knights include three Nobel laureates: University of Manchester physicists Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov, who received the 2010 physics Nobel Prize for their work on gra-phene, and struc-tural biologist Venki Ramakrishnan of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, who shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for discovering the structure of the ribosome.
