Extending 4000 kilometers from east to west and 200 kilometers from north to south, the Sahel belt south of the Sahara desert is noted as the region with the most considerable desertification in the world. Droughts have been frequent in the Sahel region since the 1970s, particularly in 1984 and 1985 when a great drought inflicted serious damage and large numbers of people dying from starvation among the nomads and farmers. To stop the desertification of the Sahel region, Japan is contributing ODA and a range of activities initiated by the private sector.
