Examining teacher-student relationships in middle schools

Building a teacher-student relationship can be rewarding and challenging at the same time. Previous research suggests that teacher-student relationships are an imperative component of middle school education (Ryan et al., 2013). Connections between teachers and students can foster intrinsic motivation and increased effort in academic subjects (Daniels & Arapostathis, 2005). According to Reichert and Hawley (2013), caring teachers often exhibit communication behaviors that facilitate teacher-student relationships. The importance of these relationships can result in lowering high school dropout rates and improving college preparation for students.
