The Focke Achgelis FA 223 'Drache' (Dragon) was derived from the slightly earlier FA 226, a six-seater initially ordered by Lufthansa in 1938 as a passenger aircraft. Despite the fact that Heinrich Focke (founder of Focke Wulf) was out of favour with the Nazi regime, the FA 226 impressed the Air Ministry to the extent that it ordered a prototype, redesignated FA 233, with improved mechanical reliability.The airframe comprised a rather delicate tubular steel space frame, with a large glazed cabin at the front, and fabric-covered tail. The twin 12-metre rotors were mounted on either side of the fuselage on long, spidery pylons. Power was provided by a single BMW Bramo 323Q3 air-cooled radial engine, mounted amidships.The aircraft had a maximum speed of 109mph (175 km/h) and a service ceiling of 16,000ft (4,875m).
