New schedules for installing simplified VDRs (S-VDRs) were agreed at last month's IMO Marine Safety Committee that could see more than two years added to the timetable for some ships to install them. Other ships, however, will have to fit them earlier than previously expected. As the table on p14 shows, the fixed deadlines have been replaced with three-year windows, which open earlier than the original deadlines and close at the next scheduled drydock. So this should allow more time for the many thousands of ships that will be covered by the requirements-a task that Martin Taylor-S-VDR programme manager at Kelvin Hughes-described to Safety at Sea International as "a major headache for most companies."
