The current shortage of officers in international shipping has left no room to differentiate wage rates, which are usually based on the officer's experience, or the type or size of vessel. A master with only handysize bulk carrier experience can demand the same salary as a master of a much larger Panamax or Capesize vessel, according to John G Wood, the fleet personnel manager of Wallem Shipmanagement. It is much the same on tankers, with no advantage accruing in respect of experience and ship size, Wood told delegates of the 8th Asia Pacific Manning & Training Conference in Manila in mid-November.
