Collision regulations are among the subjects dealt with most frequently in our monthly Marine Accident Reporting Scheme (MARS) pages. These reports, submitted by seafarers to the Nautical Institute, often express frustration at another ship's lack of understanding - or apparently ignoring - the Colregs and show that there are entirely unnecessary risks being taken and lives put at risk. So SASI welcomes the interest taken by the Italian delegation to the IMO in addressing the problem. Unfortunately, we do not think the proposal as it stands is workable.
