The device has a bending cross beam (20) supported and secured at bottom of an auxiliary frame (22). A support element is provided opposite to an associated longitudinal beam (16), and supports laterally projecting carrier part of the bending cross beam in head-on collision with small width coverage at a side associated with a connecting region (27) of the auxiliary frame. A detection unit detects front collision with small width coverage, and an actuator is arranged on a side of an obstacle wheel to be brought inwardly depending upon the detection of head-on collision.
