The semi-submersible vessel Mighty Servant 3 achieved the unwelcome distinction of becoming the first vessel to release a simplified voyage data recorder (SVDR) capsule when it sank a mile from the port of Luanda, off north Angola, last December. The Dutch-flagged 27,720dwt vessel had submerged to enable the drilling platform Aleutian Key to float clear on its own buoyancy. According to reports, however, the Mighty Servant 3 developed a list and continued to submerge and did not stop until it settled on the seabed 53m below.
