Water ingress monitors come aboard smaller ships

As of 1 January, water ingress monitors became mandatory on smaller new and existing single-hold dry cargo ships. The measure was introduced in response to concerns over the ease in which small single-hulled general cargo ships can sink if water gets into the hold. Under the new rule crews should have enough time to react in case of water ingress into a cargo hold or a forepeak void space. The rule was introduced by IMO's Maritime Safety Committee in May 2005 through Regulation II-1/23-3, requiring the fitting of an International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) type-approved system similar to those mandatory on bulk carriers since 2005.
