A new device from UK-based C-Vigil takes an interesting approach to fighting piracy. Most countermeasures produced in recent months have focused on preventing pirates from getting on to vessels, but one company is focusing on preventing the culprits from making off with the vessel once on board. C-Vigil has developed a product that acts as an immobiliser for ship's engines. It works with both air- and electrically-started units using programmable logic controller (PLC) technology to switch off the engine for periods of two, four, six or eight hours.
