Piracy focus shifts to Gulf of Guinea

Following the sharp decline in Somali pirate attacks, international focus on the rising problem of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea has increased.As recorded in last month's SAS, by the end of October, 43 piracy incidents had been notified to the International Maritime Bureau (1MB) piracy reporting centre in the Gulf of Guinea, including 20 successful boardings and nine hijackings. The distribution of attempted attacks and hijackings has been broadly flat, at about four to six events per month this year.
