At the end of January and the start of February 2014, no fewer than three ship collision incidents occurred off Singapore, spilling 360mt of fuel oil into the surrounding waters and sparking questions about the Maritime and Port Authority's (MPA's) ability to handle such dense traffic. However, Singapore was not alone in experiencing such accidents. In February, a Shanghai Maritime Bureau report revealed that accident rates climbed significantly in 2013, when 32 incidents caused 24 wreckages and 11 fatalities. Bad weather, especially smog, was to blame in most cases but increased traffic was also a factor, said the bureau.
