South Koreans have been taking safety more seriously than ever since the Sewol disaster in 2014. The ferry capsized during a routine Incheon-Jeju trip on 16 April 2014, leaving 304 of 476 passengers and crew dead or missing. To raise awareness of maritime safety in South Korea, the country's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries organised the inaugural Maritime Safety Expo from 27-30 May 2015 in Busan. The ministry said, "The nation was stupefied by the tragic maritime casualty and the needs of maritime safety have been increasing day by day in South Korea. The importance of maritime safety is gaining momentum. The expo is held to aim at maritime safety and preventing maritime casualties in advance." In tandem with the growing importance of maritime safety, PPE is attracting more attention and this was evident at the expo.
