Many tankers are still not ready for electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS), despite a recent flurry of initiatives to provide generic and type-specific training, according to the UK Hydro-graphic Office (UKHO). On 1 July, SOLAS regulations made ECDIS mandatory for tankers of 3,000 gt and above. By June, however, only about 54% of the world's fleet of at least 8,750 tankers were using electronic nautical charts (ENCs) on ECDIS, according to the UKHO. UKHO warned that the transition will put pressure on all elements of the ECDIS supply chain, including crews, training providers, and crewing companies.
