Conditions at sea directly affect how materials react to friction over time. Wet decking can present a warping problem. Extreme weather, damp, and contaminants such as salt, grease, and cleaning products, can all impact on accident frequency. As guidance and regulation SOLAS specifies slip-free surfaces, but not specific materials. SOLAS Chapter Ⅱ-2, Regulation 1 3, 3.2.4.1 mandates "slip-free surfaces underfoot" on escape routes. ASTM International also gives some guidance on its standards, such as Standard Practice for Safe Walking Surfaces: ASTM F1637.
