摘要

In response to Kevin Bridges' article on 'compensation culture' and the burdens placed on businesses by health and safety legislation [SHP, December 2013]. The 'compensation culture'that Kevin states as being "real or perceived" is presumably a reference to the content of not just the Lofstedt report, but that of Lord Young. Lofstedt stated that there is "no clear evidence a compensation culture exists" and Young concurred in saying the compensation culture "is one of perception rather than reality". If it is 'perceived' rather than real, why is it commonly used by health and safety naysayers when utilising these reports as a blunt tool to remove legislation? It still remains that only one in seven of those injured at work actually make a claim resulting in a payout.
