Nikolai Aleksandrovich Menshutkin (to 100th Anniversary of His Death)

N.A. Menshutkin is, together with his closest associates from St. Petersburg University, A.M. Butlerov (1828-1886) and D.I. Mendeleev (1834-1907), among the most prominent Russian chemists of the second half of the XIX century. N.A. Menshutkin's research in chemical kinetics actually initiated application of physicochemical techniques in organic chemistry. The textbook Analiticheskaya khimiya (Analytical Chemistry), written by N.A. Menshutkin, presented a novel approach to a study of this discipline, ran into 16 editions, was the main manual of analytical chemistry during many years, and was translated into German and English. The scientist made a major contribution to the organization of laboratories at St. Petersburg University and Polytechnic Institute and development of chemical education in Russia.
