On the eve of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Academician V.A. Kotel'nikov (the first editor-in-chief of Radiotekhnika i Elektronika (Journal of Communications Technology and Electronics)), to be celebrated in September 2008, the editorial board has prepared two issues (nos. 9 and 10) devoted to this event. Kotel'nikov's work is a landmark in Russian and international science. Kotel'nikov was an outstanding scientist and engineer in the fields of radio engineering, radio physics, and information science. The name Kotel'nikov has been closely associated with digital signal processing, one of the most important directions in radio physics. The Kotel'nikov theorem is in the vocabulary of engineers engaged in such fields as digital communications, radar, and television. The theory of potential noise immunity elaborated by Kotel'nikov enables determination of the quality of any communication channel-from traditional radio-relay links and stations to the most advanced fiberoptic and satellite links, cellular radiotelephones, and hidden communications-via the use of spread-spectrum signals.
